- Take a warm shower about 90 minutes before you want to be asleep. Warm, not cold, and at least ten minutes. It pulls blood to your hands and feet, dumps heat through the skin, and drops your core temperature on the schedule your body is already trying to follow. A meta-analysis of 13 trials found it cuts time-to-sleep by roughly a third, and it works whether or not you can do anything about the room.

Seven Nights
In July, Climate Central put a number to something most people have felt: across 253 U.S. cities, hot nights cost the average person close to 56 hours of sleep a year. That is about seven nights’ worth, never given back.
For a community that already treats sleep as the first thing to give up, that number lands differently. This is a population trained to read tiredness as a discipline problem, and to reach for an explanation involving character before one involving the weather. Sometimes it is the weather.
What Heat Actually Does
Sleep begins as a temperature event. About an hour before your usual bedtime your core temperature falls by roughly half a degree to a degree Fahrenheit, and that drop is part of the mechanism rather than a side effect of getting sleepy. The body sheds heat through the hands and feet, core temperature comes down, and sleep follows. Block the heat loss and you interfere with the trigger itself.
A warm room blocks it. Across studies, elevated nighttime temperatures reduce total sleep time and sleep efficiency and increase time spent awake after falling asleep, and the damage concentrates in deep sleep and REM. Those are the stages that consolidate memory, regulate mood and repair tissue. A hot night takes its cost out of the useful part rather than evenly across it.
Why This Community Loses More
Two reasons, and neither is about willpower.
The first is health. A December 2025 study from the Keck School of Medicine at USC, with Harvard and Brigham and Women’s, tracked 14,232 adults over more than 12 million nights and found heat-related sleep loss falls hardest on people managing chronic conditions. Chronic Pain is the top-ranked concern for Veterans in this year’s survey. The people here already fighting for sleep are the ones the heat hits hardest.
The second is housing. Standard sleep guidance assumes you can set the temperature where you sleep, and a large share of this community cannot: aging privatized family housing, older barracks, rentals, and homes owned on a fixed income. If your room will not cool, the advice about holding the bedroom at 65 to 68 degrees is not advice. It is a description of somewhere else.
The Cooling Window
The most useful finding in this area is also the most counterintuitive: to cool down faster, warm up first.
A systematic review of 13 trials found that passive body heating (a warm shower or bath at 104 to 109 degrees, for as little as ten minutes, taken one to two hours before bed) shortened the time to fall asleep by about a third. Ninety minutes ahead of bedtime is the sweet spot.
Warm water pulls circulation toward the skin, widening the gradient between core and extremities so heat runs out through it. Twenty minutes later your core temperature is falling faster than it would have alone. A cold shower feels better in the moment and does the opposite, constricting the vessels that were about to do the work.
Everything else is smaller but real: a fan moving air across skin, thin bedding, cooling the sleep space rather than the whole home.
When You Cannot Control the Room
For a lot of this community, the temperature where they sleep is not something they set. There are three levers depending on where you live, and most people know about none of them.
If you own or rent off base, the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program covers cooling in many states, not only winter heating. The average cooling benefit runs around $656, and in some cases it will help pay for an air conditioner where a household member has a documented medical need. Eligibility is income-based, and many states require a household member over 60, living with a disability, or a child under six. That describes a lot of the Veteran cohort.
If you live in privatized family housing, the Tenant Bill of Rights, law at 10 USC 2890, gives you the right to a unit meeting health and environmental standards with working fixtures and utilities, and the right to report habitability problems to the landlord, the chain of command and the housing office without reprisal. Working HVAC is not a favor.
If you live in barracks or unaccompanied housing, functioning HVAC has been a pass-fail habitability standard since April 2025, and a room that fails without a quick fix is supposed to trigger relocation.
The move is the same in all three cases. Document it, report it in writing, keep a copy, and follow up. Sleep is the reason it matters.
When It Is Not the Heat
If sleep does not come back when the weather breaks, the heat was not the problem, or not all of it. Insomnia, nightmares and apnea are separate conditions with their own treatments, and apnea goes undiagnosed here for years. If the answer is the heat it ends with the season. If it does not, that is better to know before winter.
